The primary role of the Occupational Therapist is to assess how physical, neurological, cognitive, and psychosocial conditions impact a persons ability to perform daily activities, and to design structured, goal-oriented rehabilitation programs to address these limitations.
In orthopedic rehabilitation, the Occupational Therapist facilitates recovery following fractures, tendon and nerve injuries, joint replacements, arthritis, and other musculoskeletal conditions. Intervention includes restoration of range of motion, strengthening, pain management strategies, scar management, edema control, hand therapy, and fabrication of custom orthoses to protect healing structures and prevent deformities.
In neurological rehabilitation, the Occupational Therapist plays a key role in retraining activities of daily living following stroke, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, Parkinsons disease, and other neurological disorders. Therapy focuses on motor re-education, sensory integration, coordination, cognitive rehabilitation, and task-specific functional training to maximize independence.
Within pediatric rehabilitation, Occupational Therapy supports children with developmental delays, cerebral palsy, brachial plexus injuries, and sensory processing challenges. Early intervention, positioning, splinting, fine motor development, and caregiver training are essential components of care.
The Occupational Therapist also provides adaptive techniques, assistive device recommendations, ergonomic guidance, and patient and caregiver education to promote safe and efficient participation in home, school, and work environments.
They also undertake the design and fabrication of customized splints for various functional needs which is a first of its kind in North East India
Overall, Occupational Therapy bridges medical recovery and functional reintegration, ensuring that rehabilitation translates into meaningful participation in everyday life.
PMR or Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation is a branch of medicine which focuses on improving the quality of life for a person with physical impairments and disabilities. A Physiatrist is a specialist in PMR who has completed both Under Graduation (MBBS) and Post Graduation (MD) in PMR.
Impairments to the human body may include a simple injury to the joint or back which makes a person unable to attend about their daily work. It may also be more severe like a Brain injury, Stroke, Spinal Cord Injury or an Amputation of Limbs. This disables a person from continuing life.
Those who are unaware that they can still have a life beyond their injury, remain locked up in their homes, believing there is no more to life than suffering.
We in PMR hope to bring awareness so that no one has to suffer following such tragic incidents. We hope to renew lives of those who have lost the ability to walk, to talk, to speak, to live. Through dedicated team work and holistic management, we hope to bring a person back to the closest form of independence they can achieve, whilst adapting to their injury. This will not only bring back a purpose to their lives, but also to their caregivers and family.
We hope to help them find an ability beyond their disability.
Physiotherapy is a branch of Rehabilitation Medicine which uses specialized exercises and equipment to help patients regain or improve their physical abilities.
Physical Therapists improve quality of life through prescribed exercises, hands-on care and patient education. They are exercise specialists who diagnose and treat movement disorders through individually
tailored exercise programs. These exercise programs are specifically designed for each individual
according to their needs, and to match their abilities and goals.
Physical Therapists work in a multitude of clinical settings, right from the intensive care units to the long term care rehabilitation facilities. The process of rehabilitation starts right from the intensive care unit and continues even after discharge as outpatient or home care therapy.
Similar to the medical field, Physical Therapists often specialize in different clinical specialties which include, Orthopedic, Neurological, Cardiorespiratory, Pediatrics, Womens' health, Geriatrics, Sports Medicine to name a few.
Patients are often referred to Physical Therapy for pain relief. Pain relief is achieved through physical means such as heat, ice, compression, elevation, traction, manipulation and mechanical and electrotherapeutic devices and most importantly through exercises and patient education. The purpose is to limit the use and dependence on pain killer medications which
often have side effects.
Exercises and patient education are two very important components of Physical Therapy. Exercise prescription is based on scientific principles and patients are urged to follow them just as they would follow a drug prescription. Too little and they may not benefit, too much or when done inaccurately could cause harm.
Overall, the goal of Physical Therapy is to prevent injury, maximize potential and achieve functional independence.
